Ultra-Low Overnight price plan option is coming this fall

The Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) price plan offers a new option to residential and small business customers in addition to the Time-of-Use and Tiered price plans. ULO has four price periods, one of which is a very low-priced overnight period:

  • On-peak, when demand for electricity is highest on average
  • Mid-peak, when demand for electricity is moderate
  • Weekend Off-peak, when demand for electricity is generally lower
  • Ultra-Low Overnight, when demand for electricity is lowest on average

With ULO pricing, you can help manage your electricity costs by shifting high usage activities, like electric vehicle charging, to lower price periods when possible.

Visit AlectraUtilities.com/CustomerChoice to learn more about choosing your rate option.

Tree trimming to ensure safety and reliability

Why does Alectra Utilities trim trees? Our proactive tree trimming program protects public safety and ensures reliable electricity distribution. During severe weather – such as high winds, freezing rain or snowstorms – trees can cause power outages when branches come into contact with overhead power lines. We hire professional utility arborists who use natural pruning methods to maintain tree health. If you see a tree that’s interfering with power lines, report it to Customer Service at 1-833-253-2872 or at: AlectraUtilities.com/ReportOutage

When landscaping, plant trees far away from power lines so that they don’t grow close to overhead wires. Plant shrubs at least three metres away from green padmount transformer boxes or other electrical equipment. Visit AlectraUtilities.com/Safety for more electrical safety tips at home and work.

It’s time to update your 72-hour emergency kit

When is the last time you reviewed your emergency kit? It’s recommended that you replenish supplies you’ve used and replace expired items every six months in the spring and autumn. Your kit should contain some basic supplies to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours, such as non-perishable food, bottled water and a flashlight. Keep these items together in something easy to carry, like a backpack, and in an easily accessible location in your home, such as the front closet. Be sure to include your pets in your emergency planning too.

Visit AlectraUtilities.com/Prepared to download our Power Outage Preparedness Guide and watch our emergency kit video.

What is cable rejuvenation?

At Alectra, we’re investing in the best technologies available to deliver safe and reliable electricity to our customers. Cable rejuvenation is an innovative and cost-effective process where we repair, protect, and extend the life of underground electrical cables – without digging them up – by injecting a silicone-based fluid into the cable.

Cable rejuvenation can extend the life of an aging cable up to 20 years and is much less disruptive than a full replacement. To date, we’ve injected more than 820 kilometres of underground cable. Watch our video at AlectraUtilities.com/Improving-Reliability and learn more about our grid modernization projects in your community.

After the storm: How to arrange electrical repairs

When severe weather strikes, it’s important to assess damages to your home. Alectra Utilities will repair utility-owned equipment, such as our service wire to the point where it connects to your home’s electrical equipment. When there’s damage to your meter base or service connection point, you’ll need to arrange repairs before we can safely reconnect power.

  1. Find a licensed electrical contractor at: findacontractor.esasafe.com.
  2. When repairs are completed, your contractor will notify the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA).
  3. The ESA will inform Alectra when it’s safe to reconnect your electrical service.

Visit AlectraUtilities.com/StormRepairs to learn more.

We’re here to help you find a financial support solution

Through the COVID-19 Energy Assistance Program (CEAP) and CEAP for Small Business, Alectra Utilities supported over 20,000 customers with $5.8 million in assistance to help pay their electricity bills. The Government of Ontario affirmed that CEAP was successful in meeting its objective of providing relief to customers who fell behind on their energy bills as a result of the pandemic. While this program is now closed, we’re still here to help. Visit AlectraUtilities.com/Payment-Assistance for support applications, or contact Customer Service at 1-833-253-2872 to set up a flexible payment plan that works for you.

Tree trimming helps to prevent power interruptions

Alectra Utilities works to keep trees away from our primary power lines along public roadways. It’s the customer’s responsibility to ensure trees on their private property are maintained around power lines coming from the road to their home or business. This is a dangerous task that requires specific planning and expertise to perform safely.

If you require tree trimming on your property near power lines:

  • Hire a professional utility arborist; and
  • Contact Alectra Customer Care at 1-833-253-2872 to temporarily disconnect the electrical supply to your property prior to performing the work.

  • Electricity bills will be lowered by 25 per cent on average for residential consumers
  • Rate increases will be held to inflation for four years
  • As many as half a million small businesses and farms will also benefit from this reduction
  • Lower-income Ontarians and those living in eligible rural communities will receive even greater reductions, as much as a 40 to 50 per cent cut

The benefit will vary for individual consumers depending on electricity usage and service territory. These measures include the eight per cent rebate introduced in January 2017 and build on previous initiatives to deliver broad-based relief on all electricity bills.

COVID-19 Recovery Rate for time-of-use customers

The Government of Ontario implemented the COVID-19 Recovery Rate to help provide consumers with more stability. From June 1 to October 31, 2020, households, farms and small businesses who pay time-of-use (TOU) electricity rates will be charged 12.8¢/kWh around the clock.

The government also announced that starting November 1, 2020, customers will be able to choose an electricity plan that best suits their needs, with the option of either TOU rates or tiered pricing, which provides a set rate for electricity up to a certain level of consumption. More information is coming soon.
