Your energy flexibility could earn you money.

When the local grid needs support, your home or business can earn money by shifting your energy use to another time, temporarily reducing your usage, or even providing energy to the grid if you have a home battery or solar panels.

Through alt by Alectra, eligible customers could get paid for taking part.

See how alt works

The challenge is not only how much electricity we use. It is also when and where we use it.

When many homes and businesses in the same area draw power at once, the local grid can come under pressure. Just like water moving through a pipe, the grid can only carry so much electricity at one time.

alt helps connect local grid needs with energy flexibility from eligible homes and businesses.

Four Ways to Go alt

When the local grid needs support, you could earn money by changing how or when you use electricity.

Shift usage

Move electricity use to a different time.

Example: Charge your EV or run business equipment later.

Reduce demand

Briefly use less electricity.

Example: A smart device temporarily reduces demand.

Return stored energy

Send stored energy back to the grid.

Example: A home battery provides energy when it is needed.

Generate power

Add local energy supply.

Example: Rooftop solar provides power to the grid.

You do not need to do all four. Your opportunity depends on your location, available energy resources and what works for your home or business.

How participation works

alt is a local energy market being developed by Alectra. It gives eligible customers a new way to get paid when their energy flexibility helps meet a local grid need.

Step 1

Alectra identifies a local grid need.

Electricity demand can become particularly high in one area at a specific time.

Step 2

The alt Grid Market opens an auction opportunity.

The market asks eligible participants to offer flexibility that could help meet that need.

Step 3

Participants submit offers.

Depending on the opportunity, a participant may offer to change when electricity is used, briefly reduce demand or use an eligible energy resource.

Step 4

Accepted participants get paid for providing flexibility.

If an offer is accepted and the agreed flexibility is provided, the local grid gets the support it needs and the participant gets paid.

There is no single fixed earnings amount. The value of flexibility depends on when and where it is needed, how much support the local grid requires, what resources are available and the results of the auction.

What is a DSO?

A Distribution System Operator, or DSO, helps coordinate local electricity needs with local energy flexibility.

As more homes and businesses use technologies like EVs, batteries, solar, smart controls, and flexible equipment, the local grid needs new ways to manage when and where electricity is used.

alt by Alectra is a customer-facing step toward this future.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is alt by Alectra?

alt is Alectra’s new local energy market. It is being developed to connect local grid needs with energy flexibility from eligible homes and businesses—and pay participants when their flexibility is selected and provided.

Does registering commit me to participate?

No. Registration is free and non-binding. It only tells Alectra that you are interested. It does not enroll you, connect a device, change how you use electricity or require you to participate.

Do I need solar panels, a battery or an EV?

No. Smart thermostats, EV charging, batteries, solar and some types of business equipment may create opportunities, but you can register even if you do not have these technologies or are not sure what may apply to you.

How much could I earn?

There is no fixed amount. Earnings can depend on when and where flexibility is needed, how much support the local grid requires, the type and amount of flexibility provided, available resources and the results of the auction.

Will I stay in control?

Yes. Registering changes nothing about your home, business or equipment. Any future participation options, settings and requirements will be explained before you decide whether to take part.

What happens after I register?

Alectra will keep you informed as alt develops and may contact you when relevant opportunities become available. You will receive the details and decide later whether participating works for you.
