Businesses: New eligibility rules for the Ontario Electricity Rebate

Starting July 1, 2022, common areas in predominantly residential multi-unit complexes (e.g., condominiums, apartments), mobile home parks, and retirement residences are eligible for the Ontario Electricity Rebate. Newly eligible business customers may apply using the self-declaration form at: AlectraUtilities.com/OERform

Businesses currently receiving the rebate under the legacy exemption that remain eligible under the new provisions (common areas, mobile home parks, retirement residences) should also contact Alectra Utilities to ensure that they continue to receive the rebate as of November 1, 2022. Visit AlectraUtilities.com/OER for more information about the Ontario Electricity Rebate.

Thank you to the residential customers and local businesses in Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Barrie, and Hamilton who participated in the GridExchange pilot program. The program proved the enormous value that customer-generated energy resources (e.g., rooftop solar panels, battery storage, EVs) bring to the electricity grid. Powering the new Henley Rowing Centre

The 2022 Canada Summer Games are taking place from August 6 to 21, 2022, and Alectra Utilities will be there as the Official Energy Supplier. The new Henley Rowing Centre (HRC) on Henley Island in St. Catharines is a fully accessible, world-class training facility, with a rooftop solar energy system installed by Alectra. This solar-powered system will produce about 43,000 kWh of renewable electricity each year, which will offset the HRC’s energy requirements and allow it to operate at net zero. We’re proud to support the legacy and opportunity these Games will bring to the community for years to come. See more ways we’re leading the transition to net zero at: Alectra.com/Grid-Innovation

Choose the electricity price plan that’s right for you

If you’re thinking about switching from Time-of-Use (TOU) to Tiered pricing, pay close attention to how much electricity you use in a month and when you use it.

TOU: The price depends on when you use electricity during the day and night. You can help manage your electricity costs by shifting your usage to lower off-peak price periods when possible.

Tiered: The price depends on how much electricity you use in a month. You can use a certain amount of electricity per month at a lower price, and once you exceed that limit, a higher price applies.

Use the electricity information from your bill, or log in to My Account and go to Meter Data to see your electricity usage patterns. Learn more about the tools available to compare your bill with TOU and Tiered prices at AlectraUtilities.com/CustomerChoice.

The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the more you’ll save on your summer cooling costs. Why does Alectra Utilities trim trees?

During severe weather, such as high winds, freezing rain or snowstorms, trees can cause power outages when branches come into contact with overhead power lines. Alectra’s proactive tree trimming program protects public safety and ensures reliable electricity distribution.

We hire professional utility arborists who use natural pruning methods to maintain the health of the trees. Unless it’s an emergency, Alectra will notify you in advance about tree trimming in your neighbourhood and if a planned power interruption is required.

If you see a tree that’s interfering with power lines, report it to Alectra Customer Care at 1-833-253-2872, or use our online form at AlectraUtilities.com/ReportOutage.

Summer Time-of-Use schedule and pricing

Customers are reminded that On-peak and Mid-peak Time-of-Use time periods have changed to summer hours effective May 1, 2018.

The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) has set new Time-of-Use electricity prices based on the current inflation rate (1.63%) as required by the Ontario Fair Hydro Plan Act, 2017. Since delivery charges have increased by approximately 1.7%, electricity prices were reduced marginally from the July 1, 2017 prices to ensure the impact to bills is held to the rate of inflation. These new prices are in effect from May 1, 2018 to April 30, 2019.

The OEB has also approved new distribution and transmission rates for Alectra Utilities as of May 1, 2018. For more information, please visit AlectraUtilities.com/Rates.

6.5 cents/kWh off-peak, 9.4 cents/kWh mid-peak, 13.2 cents/kWh on-peak

Ontario’s Fair Hydro Plan: Bringing electricity bills down
  • Electricity bills will be lowered by 25 per cent on average for residential consumers
  • Rate increases will be held to inflation for four years
  • As many as half a million small businesses and farms will also benefit from this reduction
  • Lower-income Ontarians and those living in eligible rural communities will receive even greater reductions, as much as a 40 to 50 per cent cut

The benefit will vary for individual consumers depending on electricity usage and service territory. These measures include the eight per cent rebate introduced in January 2017 and build on previous initiatives to deliver broad-based relief on all electricity bills. To find out more, visit Ontario.ca/FairHydroPlan.

Summertime safety tips for kids and parents
  1. Don’t fly toys near power lines – keep kites, remote control helicopters, drones and other airborne toys well away.
  2. Electrical equipment is not safe for play. Don’t play on the ground-mounted green transformer boxes in yards or parks, and never climb utility poles.
  3. Check before tree climbing. Look carefully for hidden power lines covered by branches and leaves.
  4. If you see a downed power line, stay back at least 10 metres or 33 feet – about the length of a school bus – and call 9-1-1.

Have a safe and happy summer!

Downed power lines and your safety

High winds or fallen branches can bring power lines down suddenly and unexpectedly. Electrical wires can re-energize within seconds after falling, and the ground around them may be energized as well.

Remember, if you see a downed power line:

  • Stay back at least 10 metres or 33 feet (the length of a school bus)
